If you’re an education marketer, you’re no stranger to the use of customization and technology to engage prospective students and their families. A new vendor is raising the bar to a whole new level, however, with the introduction of virtual reality campus tours.
CampusTourVR is an immersive virtual viewing experience, complete with specialized goggles and a unique access code for each school. Schools that sign can send their prospects on a “virtual tour” via their mobile devices to experience a 360-degree view of the campus.
If you were a child of the ’80s, you’ll probably be reminded of the View-Master toy that let you click through 3D images of your favorite cartoon characters. CampusTourVR is in the same vein, only students have to slide their smartphones into the viewfinder and put on the goggles to experience the video tour.
Although this isn’t necessarily the type of recruitment bells-and-whistles solution that most colleges will likely sign up for (at least not yet), it goes to show that marketing tactics must become more and more technology-driven to resonate with its very tech savvy audience of college-bounders. While virtual reality might be a bit beyond many institutions’ budget and scope, the fact is most education marketers are experimenting with new ways to reach their target students.
Even if you’re not ready to invite your prospects for a virtual reality tour, messaging them on the platforms that they use most, on the devices that they carry, and timing your messaging to where they are in the college selection process is key.
